Driver training centre

Seven modules, about 90 minutes total. Every one has to be completed before your account goes live, and some are repeated each year.

Why this is required. California regulates transportation network companies through the Public Utilities Commission. These modules cover obligations that fall on both CarryU and you as a driver. Completion is recorded with a timestamp against your driver record and is auditable by the CPUC.

Module 1 · Required before first trip

Zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy

CarryU operates a zero-tolerance policy on drug and alcohol use. You may not drive under the influence of any substance, including prescription medication that impairs driving. A rider can report a suspected violation from inside the app; when they do, your account is suspended immediately while the report is investigated. Confirmed violations end your access to the platform permanently. This module covers what counts as a violation, what happens during an investigation, and how to respond if you are reported.

Basis: CPUC Decision 13-09-045. Renewed annually.
Module 2 · Required before first trip

Accessibility and service animals

You must accept a rider travelling with a service animal. This is not optional, allergies and personal preference are not exemptions, and refusing is grounds for removal from the platform. The module also covers assisting riders with mobility devices, stowing folding wheelchairs and walkers, and how to handle a trip where the vehicle cannot accommodate a rider's equipment. It explains what to say and do rather than leaving you to guess.

Basis: Americans with Disabilities Act; California Unruh Civil Rights Act; CPUC accessibility rules.
Module 3 · Required before first trip

Distracted driving and phone use

California law prohibits holding a phone while driving. Your device must be mounted, and you may only activate or deactivate a function with a single tap or swipe. This module covers legal mounting positions, handling trip requests safely, why you should never read messages at a light, and how to pull over safely when you need to interact with the app properly.

Basis: California Vehicle Code section 23123.5. Renewed annually.
Module 4 · Required before first trip

Insurance periods and what they mean for you

Your app-on time is split into three periods, and different insurance applies in each. Period 1 runs from going online until you accept a trip. Period 2 runs from acceptance until your passenger is in the car. Period 3 runs from pickup until they get out. Critically, your personal auto policy does not cover you in any of these periods, and provides no collision or comprehensive cover for your own vehicle from the moment you log on. This module walks through each period, what CarryU's policy covers, and what to do at the scene of a collision.

Basis: California Public Utilities Code sections 5432 and 5433.
Module 5 · Required before first trip

Vehicle standards and the 19-point inspection

Your vehicle needs a 19-point inspection at a Bureau of Automotive Repair licensed facility before your first trip, renewed every 12 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This module lists all nineteen inspection points so you can spot problems before you pay for an inspection, explains how to upload your certificate, and covers the monthly odometer reporting that tracks your mileage against the 50,000-mile limit. Your account suspends automatically when an inspection expires.

Basis: CPUC General Order 157-E.
Module 6 · Required before first trip

Passenger safety and incident reporting

How to verify you have the right rider before they get in, how to handle an intoxicated or aggressive passenger, when to end a trip early, and what to do after a collision. The module sets out which incidents must be reported to CarryU, the deadline for reporting each type, and which ones also require a police report. It covers your right to decline or end a trip when you feel unsafe.

Basis: CPUC incident reporting requirements; CarryU community standards.
Module 7 · Required before first trip

Anti-discrimination and rider conduct

You may not refuse or cancel a trip based on a rider's race, colour, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or any other protected characteristic, or based on the neighbourhood they are travelling to or from. This module covers what lawful trip refusal looks like, how cancellation patterns are monitored, and how to report a rider whose conduct violates community standards.

Basis: California Unruh Civil Rights Act; CPUC non-discrimination requirements.
Recommended · Not required

Earning well in your market

Not a compliance module. Where demand concentrates through the week in your area, why staging in a designated waiting area earns more than circling, how the three periods affect your fuel costs, and how to read your weekly earnings breakdown. Optional, but drivers who complete it tend to spend less time and fuel waiting for a match.

Optional. No completion deadline.

Keeping your account active

A few things expire. The app warns you before they do.

Every quarter

Your driving record is reviewed. Nothing is required from you unless something is flagged.

Every month

Report your odometer reading and confirm your personal auto insurance is still in force.

Every year

Renew the 19-point inspection, or sooner if you pass 50,000 miles. Retake modules 1 and 3.

If something lapses

Your account suspends automatically and you cannot go online until it is cured. Upload the missing document and access is restored, usually within a business day.
